A discussion of the impact of substance abuse in the workplace, and related arbitration decisions. Different approaches taken by the parties and by arbitrators are discussed, as is whether drug should be treated differently from alcohol. The legal status of different drugs in various jurisdictions and in different industrial settings, and the issues arising from the legal status are reviewed. The use of a joint labor-management approach to substance abuse and the availability of a rehabilitation option are advocated.
